South Taipei Sphere (with Red Room Rendezvous)

In Fall 2020 I was planning an exhibition in what was then the Urbn Culture restaurant on Keelung Road when the venue was sold! I was a bit put out, but fortunately the venue was sold to the Red Room arts organization. After a quick meeting I was penciled in as their first exhibitor, and even better, the available space was now doubled! The exhibition ran from Dec 2020 to Feb 2021 (luckily missing lockdowns by a few months) and was a success. Afterwards we discussed some more ways to collaborate and this drawing was born.

Red Room has supported arts and cultural events in Taiwan for many years. They wanted to build a collection of pieces from their exhibitors and also have something related to their new gallery and restaurant space. After having fun experimenting with Tianmu Skyline and Dalongdong I wanted to keep trying new things! I’d seen a few drawings in 5 point perspective online and felt my style could look quite dramatic in that form. It also meant I could make Red Room the focal point of the drawing. After working out a couple of concept sketches I was excited to try a full piece. Right around then Taiwan went into a form of lockdown. With most of my usual activities curtailed I threw myself into bike rides and making this. It centers on Keelung Road and the Red Room space with Dunhua, Heping, Xinhai, Anhe, and Tonghua all prominent. Fuzhoushan, 101, and a spur of the Beast Mountains makes up one border while Fuxing Road, Taida, Linjiang and Xinyi Roads make up the rest. The brown line of the MRT runs along the center between Liuzhangli and Technology Building stations.

Below: New towers at Technology Building, the vast Chenggong Public Housing estate at sunset, and an old swallow-tail roofed house just south of Keelung Road

As the first piece I made in this style there were a fair few challenges. The main things to watch out for with drawing real places in this style are scaling and distortion. I worked out scale by measuring set things (like identical shopfronts) that repeated on many blocks, and then setting concentric circles wherein the scale would gradually reduce. If that sounds complex and tedious, it was! The drawing is large enough that far from the vanishing points there was a problem with extreme distortion. I solved this by adding some extra vanishing points. Lighting was also tricky and I tried to make the light source adapt to the curved sphere surface but I’d say I only really got that down by the Tokyo one. For all the difficulties though it was an enjoyable challenge making this and that’s a big part of why I’ve continued to create them.
